An Abysmal Situation

Education in Pakistan is in an abysmal situation. Its crisis is in terms of three dimensions: values, methods and framework. It reflects the immense schisms and turbulence in our society and country at large.
In terms of values, the foremost necessity in education is a commitment to truth. Truth is a bedrock of a good educational system. It is imperative for every educational institution, teacher and student. This is relevant to social character and the defects in it. Our society lacks commitment to truth.

Every system of education has a framework in which it operates. Our's is rigid and antiquated. Instead of genuine learning, they emphasize memorization and the acquisition of degrees and certificates.

In terms of method, the emphasis must shift towards the creativity. It is not desirable for teachers to copy onto the board thing from textbooks and force students to memorize it and then reproduce as it is. Those who do well in examinations have not really imbibed a good education. Those who do badly in them do not necessarily lack talent. There is a need to alter the present methods into those which develop the powers of reasoning, analysis and comprehension.
Good education is not easy to achieve. It presupposes an open mind, a spirit of inquiry, a stress on thought and a respect for it. Sadly, we can't claim to have any of these.
What sort of citizens are we producing for the future? This entire prospect is depressing. There is a need to radically change the approach of education in Pakistan.

i agree with you ! the situation does need attention and a change is required.i'm a student of Mbbs and in my college too this memorizing and ''rattafying'' system is the standard for assessment. But a few teachers who've been :P ''imported'' from say England or America are trying to bring a change in the way students are assessed.the cause for worry is, the slow pace of this change . We need to amp it up and not just at the university or college level but start at the school level. An assessment should be made: what is the student good in ? math, science, business, computers or art? then he should be focused on the subjects he has interest in. Not everyone can be a doctor or engineer. we need to be open minded . For instance , in Pakistan we hardly have any nurses let alone capable ones as compared to the doctors. If we don't stop thinking that anyone who is a nurse, a farmer or a plumber, is uneducated or their profession doesn't deserve the same respect as a doctor ,we are inadvertently preventing many people who can be good in many other fields like these from achieving their full potential. We need to have educated nurses, farmers and plumbers . one of biggest asset in pakistan is our population! we need to convert the unskilled labour into skilled and educated people that are a benefit to our society. for that we need good workshops colleges and trained professionals who are good at teaching. in short we need people who are good at what they do .

Creativity is as important as ability to execute. Execution alone can only take you to a certain point. For sustained competitive advantage, creativity is something that helps one to increase the wedge between the value and the cost. Unfortunately, which is limited in Pakistan's educational system.

Education should produce well-rounded persons. The purpose of good education is not only to impart academic learning but also the inculcation of ethics and sound values. students should be enabled to develop their emotional well-being.
our teachers, which are very few, generally do not put in their efforts to bring out the best in their students, develop their character and promote intellectual growth.

You have indeed shed light on a very important subject. However it is the job of every citizen to work on the upliftment and enhancement of the society and issues that concern these matters, education being unassumingly a division of immense importance.

i study in a college where we STILL follow the same line of syllabus that was introduced ever since the college itself came into existence and its been over 55 years,to be precise.Since then, the syllabus has never been upgraded or enhanced to meet today's demands.I, being a student of the interior's, find it hard to connect my own ideas to the teachers at this stage where they still work with having straight lines in a room and the rusty old ideas of having no theme walls. This was just an example to state the current situation of education being taught at one of the prestigious institutes of Pakistan.
i find it right to mourn about the educational status we are presently going through.I wonder if u ever came across to tuning in to a conversation of a group of students of a government's college.U either roll ur eyes to what they have to discuss or the standard of jokes they share or change ur seat since u dont want to be,in any sense, connected to them. Why? arent we all the "new generation of this country"?? are we not one of them? pause and think.
yes. We ARE one of them. Only differentiated by the status of our education and living. The only reason the private institutes were opened was because the government ones DIDNOT cater to today's needs. They still have teachers who are now old school of thoughts, who still believe in the rattofying system and "sooti ki maar"...we need to change. And fast or else it wud be years and days of us whining and criticizing this system without reaching what we aim for.I,the other day,was surprised and shocked when i got to give away to a title to one of my seniors on stage at the last farewell party. The title she got was "teacher's pet" and when she came to collect it was like *whispering mode* "what does this mean? bata bhi do" and THAT had me shocked for a while to see an A plus student,a topper since the last 4 years to ask me such a stupid question.
the decision now rests with u.

Education is an importance part in everyone's life as B. F. Skinner says " Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten".Good education is not only to limited to academic learning but also to learn ethics and sound values which now days carry great importance around the globe. hence this important issue should be dealt with more energy as a well groomed and an intellectual person only becomes with a proper educational background.

i stronglly agree but at the same time i would like to mention here is that education and values training starts at home and thats the cradle of learning and grooming in the first place. good education starts at home, and its the family that matters the most.education systems will groom them further, secondly good education requires good and trained teachers whom are a becon of learning and ideals for students so teachers training is also part of that and thirdly its the responsibility of the government to allocate resources for its uplift. in a country with less than 1% budget allocation for education , how can we imagine quality, but still we should not make it an excuse, atleast we can work on our curriculum, structured course schedules, include ethics in our curriculum and provide true guidance for the students depending upon their qualities and capabilities to put the right man in the right profession and even if we fail to produce good professionals, we should produce good human beings.

If you know the importance of education in your life, it means, you have started learning in reality. Because only those who are learning very seriously are one of the successful ppl..education teaches us the most prominent feature of personality that is "ideal behavior". We know that if we give respect, we get respect in response. Our behavior becomes unique for everybody. In our behavior, education brings sweetness. So ppl should come to learn and change their behaviour towards others...and specifically pakistani ppl really need it to have a prosperous pakistan

All work hard to achieve academic excellence, commitment to truth fails when we enter professional life---- Doctors refuse to treat the truly needy, teachers barely have excess time, judges fail to carry forth their oath, police brutally extract confession from the innocent. WHY is education considered in syllabus only, why are moral values & ethics not part of our education system anymore, why have the educational system failed to groom.

I agree with the case presented in this essay. Our country's education system needs to be restructured in accordance with modern trends. Rote learning should be discouraged at all levels and a uniform education system should be implemented for the whole country.

True Indeed. Accumulation of vast quantities of facts and data and their memorization is not the purpose of a good education. Instead, the purpose should be to develop understanding and ability to interpret, analyze and utilize those facts and to develop meaningful relationships amongst them.

If we cannot bring about the transformation in education purely on an indigenous basis we can at least try to move forward by imbibing the experience of successes elsewhere in the world in tackling this challenge.

Agreeable!! While adequate funding for education is imperative, merely throwing money at any problem will not by itself bring about the requisite results.

Very true. Good education = good human being. We know what we are, where we are. But what we don't know, is where we will be tomorrow.

We live in a nation where nonsense has a life of its own.
Education is central to socio-economic development of a country. It plays a critical role in building human capabilities and accelerates economic growth through knowledge, skills and creative strength of a society. Education also creates awareness, tolerance, self esteem and confidence which empower people to defend their rights. The positive outcomes of education include reduction in poverty and inequality, improvement in health status and good governance in implementation of socio-economic policies. The benefits of education are not only confined to the national economy but individual also benefit from it. It has been found that every year of additional schooling increases individual's wages by 10 per cent globally 1 . The multifaceted impact of education makes it an essential element for policy framework. Developing countries, where majority of the world's population resides, need to redesign educational policies for promoting productivity in different sectors of the economy by developing highly skilled manpower and addressing their evelopment needs for rapid industrialization.

That is very true - I do think we live in a different age and the education system hasn't caught up with the children and our way of life. I feel that there's got to be a new way to tailor things more directly to the children.
