An Abysmal Situation

Education in Pakistan is in an abysmal situation. Its crisis is in terms of three dimensions: values, methods and framework. It reflects the immense schisms and turbulence in our society and country at large.
In terms of values, the foremost necessity in education is a commitment to truth. Truth is a bedrock of a good educational system. It is imperative for every educational institution, teacher and student. This is relevant to social character and the defects in it. Our society lacks commitment to truth.

Every system of education has a framework in which it operates. Our's is rigid and antiquated. Instead of genuine learning, they emphasize memorization and the acquisition of degrees and certificates.

In terms of method, the emphasis must shift towards the creativity. It is not desirable for teachers to copy onto the board thing from textbooks and force students to memorize it and then reproduce as it is. Those who do well in examinations have not really imbibed a good education. Those who do badly in them do not necessarily lack talent. There is a need to alter the present methods into those which develop the powers of reasoning, analysis and comprehension.
Good education is not easy to achieve. It presupposes an open mind, a spirit of inquiry, a stress on thought and a respect for it. Sadly, we can't claim to have any of these.
What sort of citizens are we producing for the future? This entire prospect is depressing. There is a need to radically change the approach of education in Pakistan.
